Johnny Silverhand Psycho-analysis

Johnny Silverhand is a fucking piece of charisma that captured the attention of CDPR fans in the early trailers. It’s understandable when you’re played by an elderly Keanu Reeves – it’s difficult to be a passable character. But it’s not just his appearance that makes Silverhand an interesting character. His psychological portrait, although exaggerated (like everything in the world of Cyberpunk), is extremely realistic. I suggest you take it apart a little.

Biography.

Little is known about Johnny’s childhood, except that he was born in Texas in 1988.

As a teenager he wanted to go to war and lied about his age. In the war he loses his arm and his best friend who saved him from a bullet. In memory of him, Johnny will wear a pendant with that very bullet. And instead of a hand he will get a chrome prosthesis. Johnny leaves the war as a deserter, which at that time was considered an extremely shameful action.

After some time, he changes his name to Johnny Silverhand (from birth his name was John Linder), and begins to actively engage in creativity. This is how the chrome rock band Samurai is born. Silver’s songs become popular and take first place in the top charts.

But one day Alt Cunningham appears in his life. A wayward girl falls in love with Johnny and he reciprocates. Things are not going smoothly in the relationship, the couple separates, then gets back together. And at one of these moments, after a serious scandal, Alt is kidnapped and Johnny is wounded. It turns out that Alt is a powerful netrunner who created a device for digitizing the consciousness of “murderers”, and is now in the hands of the Arasaka corporation.

The hero goes to save the girl by storming the corporation. Only during the rescue he randomly kills her. Disconnecting the body from the murderer, thereby locking the girl in digital space.

After this, Johnny disappears for ten years. And in 2023 he returns to once again take Arasaka by storm and pull Alt’s consciousness out of the clutches of the corporates. During this assault, the hero dies, and his consciousness is also digitized. Despite his death, he earned the title of legend of the metropolis Night City. And went down in history as one of the best mercenaries.

Rocker, Terrorist, Rebel

In drawing up his portrait, one can highlight a number of striking qualities, such as: impulsiveness, egocentrism, idealism, tendency to control, emotional coldness, cynicism. To understand why Johnny became like this, we turn to his biography.

Idealism and Aggression.

For some reason, the still very young Silverhand wants to join the army. He wants to get there so badly that he cheats. What does this tell us?? On the one hand, Johnny is running away from his usual lifestyle, which does not suit him. Moreover, he escapes in an extremely radical way, completely changing his life. This behavior is typical of teenagers who want to grow up quickly, move to another city, or separate from their family. Such a step does not mean that Johnny lived in a bad environment or that.n. This is just a marker of his youthful maximalism. What’s more valuable is where Johnny runs away.

War is a place of legal violence. The kingdom of aggression, if you please. Not everyone will have the desire to kill other people (even if after this you can become a hero), but Johnny is not afraid of this. Based on his future behavior, we can assume that feelings such as anger and anger were suppressed by the hero in childhood.

If aggression is suppressed in https://privecasino.uk/mobile-app/ childhood, then over time it finds two possible outlets – self-destruction and destruction aimed at others.

Silver’s behavior shows that he is unable to cope with aggression. He looks for external objects to which he can direct this feeling, and when that doesn’t work, he directs the aggression towards himself.

The war also highlights Johnny’s idealism. He firmly believes that he is fighting for something important. This can be seen at the moment when it is revealed that the war is corrupt. After this, Johnny leaves as a deserter, dooming himself to a shameful stigma. Why is it important for Johnny to idealize?? Because only then is he able to splash out aggression. The fact that war gives the go-ahead for violence is not enough. You need to understand why this is happening.

PTSD Johnny.

Silverhand returns from the war not only physically disabled, but also mentally disabled. This experience traumatizes the hero and lays a huge foundation for his further behavior.

We touched on PTSD when we talked about Joel from The Last Of Us. And manifestations of this disease can also be seen in Johnny.

Silverhand is in constant tension, he is irritable and hot-tempered. Divides the world into black and white (which in psychology is called splitting). After deserting, he is in a state of self-destruction. For a whole month he just lays around in a hotel room. Having lost the external object of aggression, he directs it inwards and “metaphorically” kills himself by changing his name. But soon he finds a way out of this situation.

Although he is not at war, he reproduces extreme conditions in his life and begins his fight against corporations. He left the war, but the war remained in his life. And he turns the desire for destruction into creativity. And the object of idealization becomes freedom.

Samurai and Defense Mechanisms of the Psyche.

What is Johnny Silverhand’s music?? It’s aggressive rock, with growling vocals and sharp guitar riffs. And the lyrics are criticism and an attack on corporations. Silver’s creativity becomes a container for his aggression. This is called sublimation, when we redirect emotion (drive) into a constructive direction. Johnny sublimates his hatred into music, this makes it emotional and sincere, which resonates in the hearts of fans.

In addition, Johnny hides his emotions behind cynicism and humor. These are yet another defense mechanisms of his psyche. Silverhand is empathetic, as evidenced by the fact that he wears the bullet as a medallion in memory of his friend. He’s not a psychopath who doesn’t care about anyone. But the fear of experiencing guilt and loss forces Johnny to distance himself from other people.

Maintaining an image, suppressing emotions, PTSD – all this keeps the hero in constant tension. Hence the craving for endless smoking.

Avoidant attachment type and egocentrism.

When a child grows up in a cold environment where his emotional needs are ignored. It develops an avoidant attachment type. This is a specificity of interpersonal communication, which is characterized by emotional coldness, inability to build close and lasting relationships with people, and problems with trust.

Johnny’s romantic stories are indicative of this. He is not capable of a long-term relationship, even when Bestia appears who can stand him – Johnny destroys his relationship with her. Fear of getting close/opening up prevents Johnny from building normal relationships with people. Until the main character of the game appears in his life.

But before that, we should mention Alt Cunningham, who is (probably) also an avoidant attachment type. Because of this, their relationship with Johnny becomes bright, intense and fast. Which is why the heroes return to them again, even if both are unable to support them.

Johnny’s egocentrism is a consequence of this type of attachment. Fear of intimacy forces a person to care only about his own needs.

By the way, it is worth noting that Johnny is not a narcissist. He is selfish, but not narcissistic. This is indicated by the fact that his work is dedicated not to himself, but to the fight against corporations. But the hero’s image and reputation are of little concern to him, he has no goal of pleasing others, his task is to convey his ideas. Yes, he acts selfishly and may seem fixated only on himself, but there is no goal in all this to amuse the ego.

V and Johnny.

Of course, the relationship between the main character of the game and Johnny Silverhand is variable and is based on the player’s roleplaying. But provided that we do not reject Johnny and are not his fan, but build rational communication with him and accept him. It is revealed that Johnny is not an egoist and a psychopath, but a tormented and confused hero. It is thanks to V (with whom they share the same body, which means Silver cannot escape anywhere) that Johnny rethinks his decisions and actions.

Johnny Silverhand Profile.

Johnny Silverhand is a carrier of the dominant schizoid psychotype. His main need is to convey his vision of the world (love of freedom and hatred of corporations). And the instrument becomes Hysteria (subdominant psychotype), through his bright appearance/charisma/eccentric behavior Johnny is able to satisfy his needs.

But besides this, he is afraid of feelings of guilt, which is why he avoids intimacy with people and acts selfishly. In those rare moments when he gets close to someone, he experiences loss (death of a friend in the war/death of Alt). The feeling of guilt makes him withdraw into himself even more, provoking self-destruction, which is fueled by suppressed aggression.

Post-traumatic stress disorder forces the hero to replay extreme events and conflicts in his life over and over again.

Johnny is a deeply traumatized, lonely individual. Relationships with such people are not built through criticism and strong emotional intimacy. And through acceptance and support, only then can something be achieved from them.

In one of the endings, if the player’s relationship with Johnny is good, the latter sacrifices his life for the sake of the hero. This is because Johnny, neither rejected nor persecuted, was finally able to open up and this allowed him to rethink his ideas and beliefs. And finally get rid of your inner demons.
